Refractive surgery is a method for correcting or improving your vision if you have a refractive error such as nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia), astigmatism, or presbyopia. There are several surgical procedures for reshaping the cornea, or clear, round dome at the front of your eye, to correct or adjust your eye's focusing ability. Other procedures include inserting a lens into your eye. LASIK is the most common type of refractive surgery, in which a laser is used to reshape the cornea. Certain refractive surgery techniques for nearsighted people will reduce the curvature of an overly steep cornea, reducing the eye's focusing power. Following surgery, images that are focused in front of the retina due to a longer eye or a steep corneal curve are pushed closer to or directly onto the retina.
